Best way to check is with a feeler gauge and a spring scale, check you hard you have to pull. My book says .002 feeler, 7-14# pull.
The .040 is nominal, machinists bore/hone each hole to suit it's piston. A set might be vary by .010.
Have you pulled another piston? #6 goes bad often, and may have been replaced with a used POS.
And ring ends should be staggered around the piston, not all lined up.
But it looks like that motor was rebuilt in the days of real jack-leg shops.
