I have found over the years that the plastic ones dont fit good, and are not accurate. I now have a large selection of Transmission inputs to use as clutch alignment tools.
When I built my Cummins/CJ-7, I only had a plastic alignment tool. Set it all up with that plastic tool. Finally went to stuff the tranny and it would not go in. The clutch disk was a little off. I used a Porta Power to push the clutch throwout arm and then fished with the tranny till the input shaft slipped in place. After that exercise, I will not ever use a junk plastic alignment tool.
Over many years mess'n with old iron, you can really collect a nice assortment of tranny input shafts. I even have some for the General's products
