Thanks,good suggestions. I am using a side mount 12V battery and jumper cables that do get warm. If I want to use a 12 volt battery, I might need some cable that mount directly to it and are shorter. It is near impossible to attach cables directly to the battery terminal. I may try taking the 12 volt battery out of another car and use short cables. There is also a gen/starter shop that will test it for free and they do the old stuff. Since the starter turned the engine fine with the plugs out, I wasn't thinking about voltage drop under load. thanks
