I guess I should have just said I'd pour gasoline in the carb. That would seem to satisfy most. Sometimes what one says and means, as opposed to the mental picture others form in their minds, are completely different. So whether you pour gas down the carb, then try to start it, or spray gas in the carb, then try to start it ,is just a matter of six in one hand and a half dozen in the other. The real misunderstanding I believe, lies in the fact that I know I'm talking about an engine without fuel going to the carb from the tank, that I just want to see if it will hit, fireup and run a little. I think some readers assumed this truck, that had been sitting up for some time, has a working carb and a full tank of gas and can't imagine why anyone would be pouring or spraying gas into the carb.
Personally ,I'm more terrified of trying to light a coleman campstove than using my method of testing an old engine but, thats just me. I really do appreciate the concern about safety and a word of caution is never wasted. If you ever hear that ol' RDavis got hurt by his method of using gas, feel free to send a e-mail or card with the words,"I told you so" and if it kills me, take a marker to my headstone and write "We told him so".
I hope its not a PW that does me in !
