After opining that the pedal was probably cast steel, I tried Chris Cases' drill test on one of my extra pedals. It, of course, tested as steel. I tried a couple other cast pieces from a FFPW and they also showed to be cast steel.

I wondered about when cast iron would be used vs. cast steel.

Basically, cast iron is cheaper, corrosion resistant and easily machined.

Steel is stronger and can be cast into more complex shapes.
