Axle thrust button optional?

Hi all,

One of my front axle shafts does not have a thrust button on the end. I haven't measured the play, but I'm wondering if these are "optional"? Or if it might be stuck in the differential or have fallen to the bottom of the housing when I was removing it? If everything measures correctly do I need the button on there?
