I recently had similar symptoms on a generator powered by a V-10 phord engine. Checked and cleaned all connections, tried known good battery, bench tested the starter. Starter bench tested good but would short-out and kill the battery voltage when under an actual load. My point is that bench testing doesn't always tell the complete story. On a similar subject, I once had an alternator that bench tested good on two different machines. I spent the better part of two days troubleshooting the charging circuit. Finally just put another alternator on it. It's been charging for five years now.
