on an axle with an open differential is to raise just one tire off the ground, leaving the other tire on the ground. Mark the raised tire and the drive shaft. Rotate the raised tire completely around twice (720 degrees) while counting the number of rotations of the drive shaft, which is your gear ratio. Your rear drive shaft would have rotated just under six (actually 5.83) times.
