Great idea with the NP540, I've thought of the same thing, but the overdrive version input shaft/gear is EXTREMELY scarce. what would be needed to changed is the input shaft, 4th gear, AND the entire cluster shaft (countershaft, or layshaft in English/Australian).
Clark 280 series 5spds, on the other hand, have a countershaft that the front two gears dis-assemble off of. Maybe that can even be flipped, then all you need is a new input shaft and 4th gear (which become 5th in the OD version). And according to Dennis Gilliam/POW, the Spicer 3052/3053A are similarly "interchangeable". If someone would figure out an easy conversion for a 3053A to a stock M37...these are cheap - $500 for good take-outs.
