Great question, Clint. Here is a shot of the dual lugs/studs on my WF. The lug/stud has a shoulder that engages the bevel in the hole on the inner rim similar to the standard lug nut and centers the wheel on the hub. The shoulder on the lug/stud extends beyond the face of the inner wheel, but the outer face of the shoulder engages the bevel of the outer rim in a similar fashion so the faces actually touch. if you look at any set of duals that have been separated, you will see a ghost outline of the face-to-face contact. All of the rim holes are beveled on both sides and could in theory be mounted in either position if the drum clearance wasn't an issue.
