battery storage? need input!

Hey guys,
how do you deal with batteries that sit in these rigs for long spells with out running.

it is not healthy to let led acid batts go dead and then bring them back only to let them go dead again. (which is exactly what i have been doing)

do you use a battery tender?
can you let a battery tender stay connected for weeks or months at a time?
are the optima batteries better for this?
