To remove the door latch is simple if you know the trick.
Remove the window regulator then lower the glass to the bottom of the door or remove it. To remove the glass, push the glass to the fully closed position. Then remove (unscrew) the front window channel that is in the lower part of the door. Then lower the window as you lower it tilt the front edge down so that the window will rotate 90 degrees. Once it has been turned 90 degrees lift it out through the top of the door tilting it to the outside of the door to remove.
Once the window is out. Remove the door latch handle mechanism as you described. Then raise the connecting bar (between the door latch and door handle mechanism) to the vertical position so that it is sticking out of the window slot in the door. Now loosen the screws that attach the door latch. Compress the latch lever so that it will fit throught the latch hole in the door. At the same time grab the connecting bar that is sticking up through the window slot and rotate the latch mechanism 90 degrees which will allow it to slip past the inner window channel that blocks it. Then you can lower the entire lock mechanism down into the door and remove it by passing it through the larger hole in the lower door.
