IIRC, didn't flathead 8's have some drawbacks, like more crank vibration and flexing due to the extra length? Fine for a passenger car that only hauls a fixed number of passengers. But trucks routinely not only carried heavy loads but were often overloaded. I would think, despite the lower power output, that the shorter I-6 crank would have less flex and vibration.
