The claws pry open the ends of the chain links. The other protrusions are used to clamp the ends of the chain links closed.

You need to talk to a native Idahoan. They probably begin using chain pliers around 5 years old.

I didn't intend for the photo become permanently attached. But, even though I removed the link, it keeps showing up.
