The ones that break also ring like a bell (or a snap-on wrench) when I drop them on the concrete. I think they'll hold up amazingly well in use. They are definitely not Chinese. They are unused army surplus that I got at Ft Lewis a decade ago. I probably have 5000 lbs of just that one kind. I think the reason they surplussed them is the J-hooks that hold the cross-links on weren't all bent down quite far enough and a lot of them slip off. I try to hammer them down, and if I go more than an eighth of an inch or so, they break. Same if I try to pry them apart. Or maybe they surplussed them because they got the wrong heat-treat. Yes, I think I should probably just take the torch and anneal the ones that need bending. I can't believe they really need to be hardened like that.
