I would have suggested that, but the problem is he can't get the voltage down low enough. It's a 6v regulator so the voltage coil should be set to cut out at 7.2V or so. Yes, he could loosen up on the current coil tab to make it cut out at a lower current, but at full charge, the voltage coil should be the one that's in control. The purpose of the current coil is to limit the current when charging a very dead battery, so as not to damage the generator or wiring. In other words, the current coil limits things when the voltage is way below "full", and the voltage coil limits things when the voltage is at "full". Start bending tabs randomly without a good idea of how things interact and without an idea of what numbers you're shooting for and you'll soon have a mess. Not quite as bad as trying to adjust the convergence board on an old color TV, but close.
No, this one's a little trickier than it seems at first glance, and since even a perfect regulator would still leave him with 1/4 the current of a true 6V generator, it's better to just find the right generator and be done with it.
