I remember them from the 1970s. The worked in a special torch. Not sure of the acetylene came in a bottle or you used carbide to make it. The "candles" were a chlorate-based substance that you could light, put in a container with a tight lid, and as they "burned" they would release oxygen. It was a clever idea, but expensive and I'm not sure how practical or safe.
