OT- "Oxygen candle" welder?

Still turning up items from a friend's estate. Besides an 1862 Colt musket in the garden shed:

Today was a sealed can of 4 "oxygen candles", apparently used to make oxygen for some kind of welder. I suspect a home use alternative to oxy/acetylene w/out bottles. Anybody know anything about those?
