The relief valve holds back ~40psi. It then opens on two stages- stage one, oil flows up to the filter, then back into pan via the point where your capillary hooks- I think.
At stage two, it opens further, dumping excess directly into the pan.
So you need to move your capillary to the higher galley, its a sort of a rib along the side of the block. The has 4 pipe plugs in it, that plug the holes drilled from there to the mains.
Sounds like you had oil pressure all along, no harm done.
