I cleaned out the capillary adapter and line, it was free and clear for sure.
Yes, I pulled out the valve plunger (used a magnet) and the spring. It looked good, the holes in it were clear.
Regarding the location of the capillary tube - interesting that you mentioned that, I was looking at my manual (WW2 Army manual) after TGP suggested looking at the valve, and based on the picture I believe that it is plumbed into the port where the oil filter is supposed to go (I do not have and oil filter). The port it is in is the one directly above the relief valve, right of the dip-stick.
When does the by-pass spring actuate? Does pressure build with temperature or should it be immediate? I go nothing when I left the port open, but perhaps the by-pass hadn't actuated?
I will see if I can find a proper plug for the oil gallery...
