OK, my brand new Weiand 8007 Action Plus intake manifold for my basically stock Chrysler 318 (68-74 heads) has a port mismatch. The intake ports are LARGER than the head ports.
The difference is not much, but there will be a step of at least 3/16" on three port sides (the middle of the paired ports is OK).
Weiand tells me this is insignificant except for all out racing, and that the port mismatch would have to be severe before the drawback outweighed the gain. (If I was all out racing I would have gone to 360 heads with bigger ports anyway. I want low and mid range torque.) I just want to make damn sure there is no problem because once I bolt it on I can't return it. And I do not want to have to take the heads off the engine and port match them.
I know that folks who put 429CJ intakes on stock 429 heads gained 35 HP despite the monsterous mismatch, and that a lot of Chevy boys run rectangular intakes on oval port heads and visa-versa with decent results.
Maybe I'm just being nitpicky for an engine that has stock compression, an RV cam and will likely never see more than 3500 rpm and cruise is 3200 rpm.
Here is the web page for the intake in question http://www.weiand.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/AMS/AMSM/8007.html
They list it as a Stealth intake, but the web page is wrong. It is actually an Action Plus, and is designed as a stock replacement, despite the hi rise design. It makes a decent amount of low and mid range torque.
Opinions?
(If you wonder why I didn't get an Edlebrock, my machine shop has a bunch of brand new Edlebrocks waiting to be surfaced. Seems they have a problem with warpage and out of alignment machining. The machine shop is making a lot of money correcting new Edlebrock intakes. Until they get their quality control under check, I don't intend to buy their products.)
