Ford didn't invent squat, in fact until 1914 ALL ferds were built by the Dodge Brothers. Bantam Designed and won the GP vehicle competition, but never built anything other than the prototypes. The government wanted production and production fast, we were going to war! Willys built the majority of the first Jeeps, then ferd, under license to Willys built several thousand up until 1943. ferd never had the rights to the GP which Willlys had purchased from Bantam. Ferd designation GP was given to them by the government for identification reasons, they did nothing but copy the Willys, they did no design work on the body or any other parts except to stamp ferd on the tailgate. The army wanted uniformity of parts not a bunch of ferd crap out there to break down. After the war the grill was changed to 7 slots because of the larger cilvilian headlights, as mentioned below.
