Since the GPW by Ford and the MB by willies were both made through 1945, neither were 'dropped' by the Army during the war, neither had a tailgate either. The Army did want things to interchange so the last jeeps used the willies engine design (the W in the GPW), however the jeeps also used many parts that were Ford designed like the grille.
