I use to have a 1948 jeep pickup with a 4 bangger. I converted it from 6 volt to 12 volt and replaced the 4 with an Olds 330 V8. What a great lugging engine that was, lots of torque!!

I'm going to assume you have a 6 volt, negative ground system:

1. Hot wire to "+" side of coil, wire from "-" side of coil to distributor;

2. With the distributor cap off and points closed, turn on the ignition and take the coil wire that goes to the dist cap and hold it about a 1/4 inch from engine block. Take a screw driver and open the points, but be sure not to touch anything but the point arm, or it will ground killing your test. You should get a spark, if not your not getting current to the distributor or you have a ground in the distributor, check your points for grease buildup. Another way you can test is with an electrical test light, connect one lead to the point arm, the other to a ground, then open the points, it should light. If your not getting spark or light you have to fix that and that will probably fix you problem.
3. Use a point file and file the distributor points, they could have some corrosion on them preventing good contact.

Don't need to have your gen connected to start your engine. You probably don't have a ballest resistor unless some has converted you over to 12 volt.

Try the above and let us know what you find out. Enjoy that jeep!!
