Any scientific data as to which is better ?

We got into this discussion over on the Plymouths Owners Club BB a while back with some claiming paper/foam were better. I could see better flow with a paper/foam, but don't buy the better filtration. Just seems oil filters were always the "heavy duty " option. Anybody have any data that supports one side or another ?
