I think some business's still make a price quote based on impressions of the owner. Maybe if you drove up in a nice car/truck and came through the door presenting yourself as owning a very rare collector truck (heck we all like to brag), it might be a factor in the price quote. Bottom line is that I think they quoted you what they thought you would be willing to pay.
I have a chrome shop in my area and I am surprised they can keep a straight face while telling me some of their prices.
Back when I worked at a service station (not gas station). I would on occasion fix a flat or such for free if it was someone who fit MY descr1ption of "a single mom down on her luck". But thinking back, I never gave a break to a suit.
Try a different shop and different tactics and see if the quotes are the same.
