I looked into it when I was building my truck and did some research. One of the biggest in our area does a lot of stuff for show cars and such and was planning on using them. While reading there FAQ page I came across the following answer to "Can I sandblast my own parts?"

"Yes you can as long as you do not sand blast them with silica sand or use a non-water soluable oil as a rust preventive after blasting. do not use any oils that contain silicone such as wd-40. using any of the above will cause fish eyes or outgassing defects in the powder as the powder is going through the curing process."

I emailed a few questions, no answer. Called and they hung up on me. I do not deal with people who act like that. especially BEFORE they have my money. My question was if it was it okay to sand something smooth with normal sandpaper if that silica would effect the quality.

I ended up painting using acrylic urethane and do not regret it. Bottom line, no matter what shop you use you are at the mercy of who does it. I learned the hard way that even though a company has a procedure, it sometimes is not always followed by their employees. Anymore, on something that matters, I'll do it myself to keep that "unknown" from entering the picture.

Hauling pieces to the place and keeping them from getting dinged up during transport was another factor. I'm with Paul here.
