The long side came disassembled.
On the short side, which is the side in question, I drove the little retainer pin out, and now I am in a position where I have to take it apart because of the way the central ball is fixed in place by another centering pin, that has now migrated up into the housing - (Murphy's Law).
With the benefit of hindsight, I would soak the whole works in a solvent like Vaughn said to try and get the cosmolene out.
But like I said I have to now take it apart, and still have to assemble the other side too.
IT is sort of a Rubick's cube. Hopefully Tim will find the instructions that originally came with it. I would rather not pound on it and possibly damage it.
These axles are an improvement compared to the stock Tracta, so are worth a little trouble.
