It affects only ignition timing and not valve train timing.

1. Take the coil wire going to the points terminal off.

2. Take off the distributor cap.

3. Rotate the engine till #1 piston is TDC.

4. Take off pump and note shaft slot position.

5. Rotate the rotor until it points at 7:00pm.

6. Take out the distributor an look at the end shaft position.

7. Advance the oil pump by 1 or 2 hours clockwise and install.

8. Install distributor.

If rotor is at 7 O'clock, you're good to go, assemble everyting. If not, take off pump, note position of slot, make adjustments to shaft position and reinstall.

I'm going from memory and it's been awhile.
