"Rebuilding" a generator is something of a misnomer. Generally it just involves cleaning up the commutator, maybe on a lathe, and new brushes and, maybe, bushings.
If there is anything wrong with the field or the armature, the generator will probably just be discarded or used for parts.
Then a little paint, and voila, a $125 generator.
We used to rebuild generators for a local garage in high school shop class.
