So on a kitchen project we are doing, the folks want us to make a handrail out of copper 1 1/4" pipe. It is a straight run up a set of stairs and levels out for the last foot. I need to make a bend in the pipe (type M.). I took it to a local metal shop today, and they tried it in their bender and it cracked. Then we tried heating it, and it squished out at the sides. I know we can cut "V" nothces out of the bottom and facet it around and tig it with copper rod, but I prefer a smoother bend.
My question is, is there a way to soften the copper, ie. take out the hardness? Repeated heating and slow cooling maybe?
Thanks
Tim
