Copper and brass get heated red and quenched. Reloaders anneal cartridge mouth by standing them in a cookie pan of water, heat mouth red, and knock it over in the water.

I guess I've never tried to anneal aluminum, but I do know it gets harder with ambient temp cycles. To keep it soft, come is shipped from the mills in dry ice- no temp cycles.
