I heard an interesting and scarier statistic today. In California, Illinois, and I think 9 other states, there are more people on the dole than have jobs.
As for the STEM numbers, those actually seem like pretty reasonable percentages. We don't need huge numbers of people inventing new machines and new theories. For every "inventor", we need a lot more "builders", and "fixers". Plus there's nothing wrong with being a good accountant or a good dentist. Being an engineer myself, when I read all the STEM articles that are coming out these days, it sounds very much like the same old agenda being pushed by the deans and professors of engineering schools to try to scare the public into giving them more money. We need good engineering and science schools, but that alone does produce innovation, much less commercially profitable products.
