I saw an interesting and scary statistic today on one of the cable news shows. Only 35% of boys and 14% of girls are interested in a science, technical, engineering or math (STEM) careers. This is not good for America and tells me one reason we have a stubbornly high unemployment rate while the stock market sores. Most of us on this forum know a thing or two about engineering, but not our young people by and large. How are we to compete with the rest of the world with stats like this? Whats wrong? Why are kids afraid of these subjects? I loved learning about our our great inventors of the past and aspired to be an engineer. When I took my daughter to tour colleges, at several of them the student tour guides were predominantly sociology, and psychology and arts majors! I mean how in God's name are we to complete globally with these majors like these. How are these young people going to get jobs that pay well and pay of their student loans which the have massed into 10's of thousands of dollars. I believe, in fact I know, there are a ton of jobs out there but they rarely get filled because the folks don't have the necessary training. I was out of work for a week myself between jobs. Thankfully I am an engineer. All I say is sleep tight America. now back to the TV.
