Check the timing cover. The 292 in my Chevy pickup has been gradually developing a noise that sounds like a slipping belt or a bad water pump bearing. It finally got consistent enough that I could figure it out. Who knows why, but the timing cover had gradually bowed outward until the crankshaft pulley was rubbing on it. I bent it back away from the pulley and it was fine. Don't know if there's a similar setup on the 318, but it's worth a look-see.
