Dean's reply concerning the pump is correct,
but, to make it more clear, the unit he refers to is the injector pump. The diesel
has a fuel pump, sometimes known as a fuel lift pump.
In simple terms, the injector pump on a diesel is like combining a carburetor and distributor (ign.) of a gas engine.
