I just went through the same problem with my 230.It seems that there is two types of rear main seal available for this motor.There is an early seal(up to '53)that uses 3 screws in the main cap and 3 screws in the block to hold the seal (metal plates with rubber lip) in position.After '53, the seals are slid into grooves in the cap and block.The later seals are U shaped rubber around a metal channel.The year of the change may not be exact but that is the info i got from the FEL_PRO book.It sounds like you could have a early rear main cap in a later style block.
You may need one seal from each to prevent leaks.Good luck.
