WC-63 rear main engine oil seal

Just had my 230 flathead rebuilt. The lower rear main cap has three threaded holes for a seal plate, but the block has no way to attach the upper seal half. There is a groove just behind the main bearing. Does a rubber seal go there? The shop said some old engines had no rear seal, but I can't imagine that. Hate to put the engine back in the truck and have it leak. Any suggestions?
