Also raised in the mountains of Idaho. I've tried it both ways. Putting them on the rear seems to work best in most situations. On highway, icy roads, going downhill they work best on the rear. They can be dangerous on front axle if on ice or slick highway. Could cause a spin if braking. Might work better on the front if you are climbing or driving in very deep snow.
