I always put them on both axles. But, if I had only one set, they would definately go on the front. The front of the truck is heavier than the back anyway, and the snowplow weighs 1,100 lbs. Unless I was to really load the pickup box full of weight, there is no way the rear would be doing as much work as the front. Chains on the front are a must for stearing into the direction I am pushing the snow and to counteract the tendency for the angled plow to want to push the front of the truck away from the direction it is moving snow. I have a set of chains for the front that I have doubled up the number of cross links. The rears have are standard and have half the number of links. The fronts have ice cleats, the rears do not. The rears are basically only to help keep the backend of the truck traveling straight while backin up the hill.
