Yeah, it's weird to read of a hammer mill being used for crushing corn, but I don't know much about farming, especially in Texas. Maybe they grow some rock-hard corn there. When I saw it my first thought was that it was something you'd use in a hobby mine or a pilot plant for a mill at a mine. Hammer mills are very noisy in operation, but are simple and easy to fabricate and can be adjusted to any size product you want. I have the residue of a home-made one somewhere. I believe all the real mines these days with flotation concentrators use jaw crashers followed by ball mills. A hammer mill driven by a flat belt from his truck might be something a small-scale gold miner in the '50s would have used, followed by a sluice box and perhaps an amalgamation plate, if he was working a little hard-rock vein of "free-milling" quartz.
