There is no in tank pump on a 1st. gen.
Loosing prime is a supply side issue, not return.
The 1st. get use a diaphragm style lift pump. So if it leaks it will either leak out the weep hole in the top of the pump. The other place the pump will leak is into the crankcase, smell the dipstick for raw diesel smell. If all that is ok then pressurize your tank with no more than 5 psi air pressure and track the supply line looking for leaks. Remember the fuel tank is not meant to be a pressure vessel so it will not withstand much pressure at all.
The VE injection pump on your engine will not tolerate much inlet pressure so if you use an aftermarket fuel pump it must be regulated for less than 11psi inlet pressure or you will blow internal seals in the IP.
