I'm no expert but it just seems to me that "long life pads" equals "short life rotors". Something has to give, and the original idea with easy-to-replace pads and shoes was to make the cheap, easy-to-replace part be the one that wears the fastest. I'm sure somebody could make true lifetime pads that will chew through dozens of rotors before the pads wear out, but is that really an improvement.
I recently heard an ad for some car, maybe a European luxury car, in which they claimed that the windshield wipers communicate with the brakes and tell the brakes to "begin drying themselves" whenever it rains. So, basically this "feature" makes the brakes drag whenever the weather is wet, burning up unnecessary fuel and unnecessarily eating up brake parts just so in the off chance you hit the brakes, they are bone dry when you do.
