Would you really buy a 1" left-handed tap to make a thin nut like that. We don't even know that it's a standard thread pitch. Probably finer than any standard. How would you hold it while threading? I'm not much of a machinist but it seem to me you'd have to thread it with the lathe, while turning the whole thing out of a piece large enough to hold in the chuck. In small-scale production, it might be possible to thread 6" or so of tubing all at once, and then finish the nuts and cut them off. It's basically a screw-machine part, except for cutting the slots for the wrench, which would have to be done in a separate operation on the mill.

You're right there's no chance for profit in it, and anybody who wants just one needs to be prepared to pay the hourly shop rate to get it made. One alternative might be if you have a high school near by that still has a shop class. It might be a good student project, especially if they could see what it's used on and learn a little something.
