Dave, we have talked about the filter problem a lot over the past few years, but in case you missed some of it, I'll sum up:

There were several different models of filters used on the WDX-WM300 model Power-Wagons, produced by several different manufactures. To make matters confusing, each was a little different (dimensionally, by design, direction that the oil flow through them, materials used, etc.) and some made cartridges and/or adapters to allow their products to fit the competitors canisters.

The most common used on these models of trucks, during the early years, was the Deluxe Clear Oil model that used the Deluxe JC model cartridge. But you can not trust that a previous owner installed the correct cartridge at the last oil change. Nearly anything can be found installed in the old canister. Some correct. Some incorrect.

NAPA used to be THE place to go to find a cartridge to fit the old Deluxe JC canister - the NAPA 1011 cartridge was the one. This was and still is supplied by Wix. The Wix number is 551011, and as you have discovered, sometimes the NAPA number reflects this. For years that Wix filter was a direct replacement for the Deluxe JC - dimensionally correct. Then, sometime during the 1990's, one of the three companies manufacturing the filters for Wix lost or otherwise mixed up the dimensions with another cartridge they were producing - a replacement for the Deluxe CU model cartridge.

The Deluxe CU was .500" taller and .125" larger diameter than the Deluxe JC. So, as you have discovered, the current Wix 551011 (and its NAPA and other variants) fits the canister too tightly. Unfortunately, at least one of the leading Power Wagon parts suppliers still sources at least some of their filters from NAPA. These cartridges also fit to tightly without alterations that they recommend.

Fortunately, there is an easy solution. A correctly sized cartridge is still readily available from Baldwin as the model JC405. It is dimensionally identical to the old Deluxe JC.

I have been collecting old filters and developing a cross reference list to both the Deluxe JC and the Deluxe CU. Unfortunately, I do not have a cross reference to other filtration systems that were used on the same trucks. I hope to compile enough information to share this some day.

Junior
