As far as using a current, or one of the older, hard cartridge replacements in place of the original "sock type" soft cartridge element, I would be leary.
The soft JC cartridge seals all around its parameter to the bore of the canister. It also seals around the outside of the upper inch or so of the "stem" or pipe that travels up through the center of the canister. The instalation of the screw on lid with its dome shaped screen on the under side puts a lot of downward and inward pressure on the cartridge enhancing the sealing effect. A hard cartridge replacement element does not seal to the bore of the canister. It seals only to the canister stem at the very top and very bottom of the cartridge using an O-ring or similar shaped rubber seal. The ones I have seen do not fit with much of an iterference to the stem and are not very thick. So, they are sealing only by about a 1/4 inch at the top and at the bottom.
I personally think a correctly fitting soft cartridge element, such as the Baldwin JC405, is the best choice for the Deluxe JC canister.

This was not how the Deluxe canister was designed to work.
