I took the oil filter off the truck a week ago because I had to replace the core plugs behind it. Anyway, there was a lot of sludge in the bottom of the canister. After taking the time to clean and repaint it and seeing how much sludge had collected in the oil filter, I decided I needed to drop the oil pan too.
So, I took the oil pan off today and removed about a quart of sludge. It was about 1 inch deep and very thick.
Also, I noticed a "cover" of sorts over the oil pickup? I'm guessing this is normal, I didn't snap a pick today, will get one tomorrow. I had expected to just see a screen, but it had this cover over it. It has open inlets up high around the sides to allow oil in.
Bottom of the engine looks good. I was focused on the pan today, but will take some pics tomorrow. Should I try to wipe or clean the bottom end of the engine? What would be the best way to accomplish this?
This is a 1955 230, should I replace the rear seal while I'm at it? Is this easy? I've never done this. There are two bolts visible. There is a large amount of oil caked up on everything. I will begin scraping it off tomorrow.
