Some are filled with oil as a heat conduction system. Those should be mounted vertically.
I do like the later design that looks like a transformer. I think they are called 'H core', for the shape of the iron core plates, though the plates look more like a square 8. ate, aitch, much the same in my swamp of a mind. Anyhow those later designs get better air cooling, and bigger sparks. Condenser may need to be matched though. I have one in my spares, from an '86 ford F150. I may try it on a flat head one day.
