I'm not positive about what DOT4 is, but I thought it was just an improved version of DOT3, which is glycol based and is soluble in water. The DOT5 is a silicone oil and floats on water. With DOT 5, any water in the system ends up at the low spots where it can freeze and block the brakes or break the lines or concentrate rust in that spot, whereas with DOT3 it mixes in with the fluid and rusts the whole system equally everywhere.
I wonder if somehow DOT 4 is heavier than water and doesn't mix with it. I can't imagine what that could be, though. Is it possible that there was so much water in the whole system that it froze everywhere and that was just the weak spot that bulged first?
