The nearest big city is Spokane, 90 miles away. They have plenty of crime. A year ago the police said they won't even investigate burglaries any more, though that might have partly been political sparring over a threat to cut their budget (they still managed a HUGE inter-agency prostitution bust). But up here we generally know who belongs and who doesn't, who the low-lifes are (usually by surname), and people look out for each other. The downside is a lot of busy-bodies, but sometimes that can be useful. In a way, you'd think it would be worse, with I-90 going right through town, but hardly anyone gets off the freeway here. There's a fair amount of drug dealing and a lot of that involves the freeway, truckers, BC bud, "crank", etc., but the message from the Sheriff's department seems to be "If you just deal drugs, we'll leave you alone, but the moment you start messing with people, we'll nail you."
I'm always amazed when squatters HAVEN'T moved into my cabin over the winter, but probably what saves me there is the road is bad, by the standards of today's city drivers. And of course the gangsta types are all scared of nature.
Believe me, I know I'm lucky to live in a place where I can leave my rigs unlocked with tools in them and nothing disappears. I used to live in Everett, Washington. Originally it was like that there, too, but the last 5 years or so as I was gradually moving out, it seemed like every time I went back somebody would steal or try to steal something. People tried to steal my car twice, and one time I had to pay the impound fee to get it back. Nowadays I hear about all the shootings all around the Seattle-Tacoma area, it it's like what you used to hear about Watts or Compton or the South Bronx. They can have it.
